      Non-pharmacological Behavior Management Techniques in Pediatric Dentistry: A Bibliometric Analysis

          Abstract

          As an emerging trend, non-pharmacological behavior management has gained immense research interest. By utilizing a bibliometric approach, this investigation aims to review the state of the non-pharmacological behavior management techniques research in pediatric dentistry. A Scopus search was done on non-pharmacological behavior management in pediatric dentistry, including literature from 1900 to 2022, using “Cited Reference Search” on 4/2/2022. After being screened, the articles were ranked according to the number of citations they had, and the publication year, authorship, contributing institutions, countries, article topic, study design, H index, and keywords were extracted. Out of the 1431 articles found during the literature search, the top 50 cited articles were used for analysis. The citation counts of the 50 selected articles varied from 163 to one, and their highest publications were in the years 2017 and 2019 (n = 7). Most studies were published in the United Kingdom (n = 10). The studies done in Australia and USA have the highest mean citation with the most significant contributions from the Department of Dental Medicine, Children's Hospital, Regional Medical Center, USA. The systematic review was the most frequent study design (n = 19). Among 110 unique keywords, dental anxiety (n = 11) was the most frequently used. This bibliometric analysis offers valuable details on the top 50 publications cited between 2006 and 2022. Although these methods have been employed for many years, only recently have they been the subject of significant scientific publications. It is hoped that this study will enable aspiring and seasoned researchers to envision and create potential future scenarios for interdisciplinary research collaborations on the use of non-pharmacological behavior management techniques in pediatric dentistry.

          Management of fear and anxiety in the dental clinic: a review.

          People who are highly anxious about undergoing dental treatment comprise approximately one in seven of the population and require careful and considerate management by dental practitioners. This paper presents a review of a number of non-pharmacological (behavioural and cognitive) techniques that can be used in the dental clinic or surgery in order to assist anxious individuals obtain needed dental care. Practical advice for managing anxious patients is provided and the evidence base for the various approaches is examined and summarized. The importance of firstly identifying dental fear and then understanding its aetiology, nature and associated components is stressed. Anxiety management techniques range from good communication and establishing rapport to the use of systematic desensitization and hypnosis. Some techniques require specialist training but many others could usefully be adopted for all dental patients, regardless of their known level of dental anxiety. It is concluded that successfully managing dentally fearful individuals is achievable for clinicians but requires a greater level of understanding, good communication and a phased treatment approach. There is an acceptable evidence base for several non-pharmacological anxiety management practices to help augment dental practitioners providing care to anxious or fearful children and adults.

            Integrative gene-metabolite network with implemented causality deciphers informational fluxes of sulphur stress response.

            The systematic accumulation of gene expression data, although revolutionary, is insufficient in itself for an understanding of system-level physiology. In the post-genomic era, the next cognitive step is linking genes to biological processes and assembling a mosaic of data into global models of biosystem function. A dynamic network of informational flows in Arabidopsis plants perturbed by sulphur depletion is presented here. With the use of an original protocol, the first biosystem response network was reconstructed from a time series of transcript and metabolite profiles, which, on the one hand, integrates complex metabolic and transcript data and, on the other hand, possesses a causal relationship. Using the informational fluxes within this reconstruction, it was possible to link system perturbation to response endpoints. Robustness and stress tolerance, as consequences of scale-free network topology, and hubs, as potential controllers of homeostasis maintenance, were revealed. Communication paths of propagating system excitement directed to physiological endpoints, such as anthocyanin accumulation and enforced root formation were dissected from the network. An auxin regulatory circuit involved in the control of a hypo-sulphur stress response was uncovered.

              Visualizing the context of citations referencing papers published by Eugene Garfield: a new type of keyword co-occurrence analysis

              During Eugene Garfield’s (EG’s) lengthy career as information scientist, he published about 1500 papers. In this study, we use the impressive oeuvre of EG to introduce a new type of bibliometric networks: keyword co-occurrences networks based on the context of citations, which are referenced in a certain paper set (here: the papers published by EG). The citation context is defined by the words which are located around a specific citation. We retrieved the citation context from Microsoft Academic. To interpret and compare the results of the new network type, we generated two further networks: co-occurrence networks which are based on title and abstract keywords from (1) EG’s papers and (2) the papers citing EG’s publications. The comparison of the three networks suggests that papers of EG and citation contexts of papers citing EG are semantically more closely related to each other than to titles and abstracts of papers citing EG. This result accords with the use of citations in research evaluation that is based on the premise that citations reflect the cognitive influence of the cited on the citing publication.
