          Abstract

          Con el objetivo de comparar la eficacia de la ivermectina y el closantel en el control de las larvas de Oestrus ovis, en ovinos adultos de una finca de la provincia de Guantánamo, se seleccionaron 27 animales de raza Pelibuey sobre la base de los signos clínicos que hacían sospechar de una infestación por el agente. Los ovinos se distribuyeron al azar en cuatro grupos de seis animales cada uno. En el día del inicio del ensayo (día 0), cada grupo recibió un tratamiento diferente: grupo (G1), tratado con ivermectina inyectable al 1% en dosis de 200 mcg/kg (1 mL/50 kg) por vía subcutánea; grupo (G2), tratado con closantel oral al 5% en dosis de 2 mL por cada 10 kg de peso; grupo (G3) testigo no tratado, inyectado con solución salina (1mL /50 kg) y el grupo (G4) centinela. Este último fue sacrificado el día 0 para estimar la carga parasitaria; todos los animales de los grupos restantes (G1, G2 y G3) fueron sacrificados el día 28 post tratamiento. La eficacia, calculada como el por ciento de reducción de larvas vivas en los grupos medicamentados respecto al control, resultó 100% en ambos antiparasitarios (G1 y G2). Se concluye que las dos drogas evaluadas fueron altamente eficaces en el control de los diferentes estadios larvarios de O. ovis.

          Translated abstract

          The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of ivermectin and closantel for controlling larvae Oestrus ovis in natutrally infested adult sheeps. To carry out this experiment, 27 Pelibuey animals, from a farm of Guantánamo province, were selected based on clinical signs, suspicious of an infestation by the agent. Those sheeps were random allotted into four groups of six animals each. At the beginning of the experiment (day 0), each group received a different treatment: group (G1), treated with 1% ivermectin injection at doses of 200 mcg / kg (1 mL/50 kg) subcutaneously (SC); group (G2), treated with a dose of 2 mL per 10 kg weight of oral closantel 5%; group (G3) untreated control, injected with saline (1 mL/50 kg) and group (G4) sentinel. This latter group was sacrificed on day 0 to estimate the parasite load. All animals from the other groups (G1, G2 and G3) were sacrificed on day 28 post-treatment. The efficacy of drugs used, based on the percentage reduction of live larvae with respect to the infested control animals, was 100% in both cases (G1 & G2). It is conclude that both drugs tested were highly effective for controlling the different larval stages of O. ovis.

          Seasonal variations in the larval burden distribution of Oestrus ovis in sheep in the southwest of Spain.

          A chronobiological study of oestrosis was conducted for larval instars of Oestrus ovis from November 2000 to September 2002 with the examination of 477 adult sheep of the southwest region of Spain. Skulls from slaughtered sheep were examined and the different O. ovis larval stages (L1, L2, L3) were recovered from the nasal-sinus cavities. O. ovis larvae were detected in 339 sheep, reaching a prevalence of 71.1%. Only one farm was free of infested sheep indicating a prevalence of the 97.91% among studied flocks. The mean larval burden was 18.54 larvae per infested head during the coldest months in the southwest of Spain when the larval burden reached its highest levels, especially of the first larval stage (L1). However, the maximum percentage of L1 coincided with the minimum percentage of the second larval stage (L2). The third larval stage (L3) was observed in relatively low levels during the entered study period, but two peaks occurred in April-May and in September-October. During the 2 years of sampling, all the different larval stages were simultaneously recovered throughout the year, indicating the existence of a long favourable period for the evolution and development of the larval instars, which would start between February and March and finishing in November.

            Ophthalmomyiasis and nasal myiasis in New Zealand: a case series.

            We report three cases of ophthalmomyiasis in New Zealand, due to the larvae of Oestrus ovis. All three patients reported eye injury caused by a fly. The larvae were removed from the conjunctival sac without difficulty under local anaesthesia. Presenting ocular symptoms of foreign body sensation, irritation, redness and photophobia all resolved swiftly. Topical antibiotic and steroid eye drops were administered. All three patients also developed nasal symptoms such as sneezing, nasal discharge and epistaxis. Otolaryngology follow-up demonstrated nasal myiasis in two patients which was treated with nasal decongestants. In addition, all three patients were treated with ivermectin (Mectizan).
