          Abstract

The international conference on Evaluation and Assessment in Software Engineering (EASE) provides a forum for empirical researchers to present their latest research, as well as to discuss issues related to evaluation and empirical studies.

We welcome papers that discuss important evaluation methods including both quantitative and qualitative methods.

We are particularly fortunate this year that in addition to papers describing laboratory experiments, surveys and a case study, we have papers that describe the use of methods as diverse as systematic literature reviews, grounded theory and constructive research.

We are particularly fortunate this year that in addition to papers describing laboratory experiments, surveys and a case study, we have papers that describe the use of methods as diverse as systematic literature reviews, grounded theory and constructive research. The quantitative research papers also span a wide variety of analysis techniques including Bayesian networks, genetic algorithms, and Kaplan-Meier survival curves.

In addition, to a wide variety of methods, the papers address a wide variety of topics including maintenance, software architecture methods, specification methods, testing, effort prediction, defect prediction, software process improvement motivators, structured abstracts and statistical process control. All these topics and more are covered in the eleven papers accepted for the conference. The small number of papers presented at EASE allows us to devote an appropriate time to discussing them without the need for parallel streams.

In addition to research papers, we are delighted to have a keynote lecture. Dr Khaled El Emam is a Senior Scientist at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute, where he leads the eHealth research program. He will describe what we can learn from medicine to improve the development, reporting and use of evidence in software engineering.

EASE is a small conference but our program committee endeavor to ensure that it is a high quality conference. Our goal is to provide everyone who attends with the opportunity to contribute to the discussions and to come away having learnt something new about software evaluation and assessment.
