          Abstract

          El objetivo del presente estudio descriptivo-comparativo fue comparar el desempeño en funciones ejecutivas de escolares entre ocho y trece años con trastorno por déficit de atención e hiperactividad (TDAH), trastorno del cálculo (TC), TDAH+TC y controles normales. Los diagnósticos se confirmaron a través de una entrevista clínica semiestructurada, un cuestionario clínico de déficit atencional y pruebas de cálculo matemático. Se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los grupos en atención visual y auditiva, fluidez verbal fonémica, flexibilidad cognitiva, organización y planeación. Los resultados indican, de manera similar que investigaciones anteriores, que los escolares con TDAH+TC presentan mayores déficits en funciones ejecutivas que los niños normales.

          Translated abstract

          The goal of this study was to compare the executive functions in children from 8 to 13 years old with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Dyscalculia (TC), ADHD+TC, and normal controls. The diagnoses were confirmed through a semi-structured clinical interview, attentional-deficit disorder questionnaire, as well as arithmetic tests. These groups exhibited statistically significant differences in different areas such as visual and auditory attention, phonemic fluency, cognitive flexibility, along with organization and planning. Similar to previous research, the results indicate that school children who suffer from ADHD+TC have greater deficits in executive functions than normal children.

          O objetivo deste estudo descritivo e comparativo foi comparar a atuação em funções executivas de escolares entre oito e treze anos com transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade (TDAH), transtorno de cálculo (TC), TDAH+TC e controis normais. Os diagnósticos foram confirmados através de uma entrevista clínica semiestruturada, um questionário clínico de déficit da atenção e probas de cálculo matemático. Foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os grupos em atenção visual e auditiva, fluência verbal fonêmica, flexibilidade cognitiva, organização e planejamento. Os resultados indicam, de maneira similar que investigações anteriores, que os escolares com TDAH+TC apresentam déficits mais elevados em funções executivas que as crianças normais.

            Social and emotional impairment in children and adolescents with ADHD and the impact on quality of life.

            This review provides an overview as to how the social and emotional impairments involved in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder affect the quality of life of patients and their families. A model of three categories into which the emotional difficulties fall, and how they impair quality of life, is also presented.

              Executive attention and metacognitive regulation.

              Metacognition refers to any knowledge or cognitive process that monitors or controls cognition. We highlight similarities between metacognitive and executive control functions, and ask how these processes might be implemented in the human brain. A review of brain imaging studies reveals a circuitry of attentional networks involved in these control processes, with its source located in midfrontal areas. These areas are active during conflict resolution, error correction, and emotional regulation. A developmental approach to the organization of the anatomy involved in executive control provides an added perspective on how these mechanisms are influenced by maturation and learning, and how they relate to metacognitive activity.
