          Abstract

          La abundancia y madurez sexual de la piangua Anadara similis fue analizada mensualmente entre septiembre de 2009 y agosto de 2010 en el archipiélago de La Plata, Bahía Málaga, Pacífico colombiano. La madurez sexual se analizó a nivel macroscópico mediante la observación del tejido reproductivo en fresco y microscópico por medio de métodos histológicos estándares. Se estimó una densidad media de 0.130 ± 0.098 ind/m² y una talla media de 42.30 ± 5.00 mm. Los meses de mayor densidad fueron mayo (0.295 ind/m²) y agosto (0.195 ind/m²). La talla media de madurez sexual fue de 41.8 ± 4.5 mm y talla media de 41 mm donde 50% de la población ha tenido mínimo un desove (L50%). Se registraron picos máximos reproductivos durante marzo (83.3%) y abril (75.0%), aunque durante todos los meses de estudio se evidenció actividad reproductiva. El 4.30% de los individuos presentaron casos de hermafroditismo, representando el primer registro de este tipo para la especie. La mayor densidad, mayor talla media, mayor rendimiento de carne en hembras y la presencia de un mayor volumen de tejido reproductivo femenino en hermafroditas, sugiere procesos de reversión sexual en esta especie, lo cual debería ser estudiado en detalle. Las bajas tallas de captura y de madurez sexual, así como la baja densidad de individuos encontrada, pueden ser producto de la alta presión por pesca, modificaciones de hábitat y procesos de contaminación, los cuales deben ser estudiados con el fin de implementar estrategias de manejo para este recurso en el área.

          Translated abstract

          The abundance and sexual maturity of piangua Anadara similis in La Plata Archipelago, Bahía Málaga, Pacific coast of Colombia, was analyzed between September 2009 and August 2010. Sexual maturity of these organisms was studied at macroscopic level using fresh samples and at microscopic level using standard histological techniques. The mean density was estimated in 0.130 ± 0.098 ind/m² and the mean size was 42.30 ± 5.00 mm. Months with the presence of the highest densities of piangua were May (0.295 ind/m²) and August (0.195 ind/m²). The mean sexual maturity size was estimated in 41.8 ± 4.5 mm, while the size at which at least 50% of the population of A. similis have had its first spawn was estimated in 41 mm. Reproductive activity of the species was present year-round with higher peaks in March (83.33%) and April (75.00%). 4.30% of organisms analyzed showed signs of hermaphroditism, being this the first record of this kind for the species. Higher density, larger mean size, higher meat yield in females as well as the presence of more female reproductive tissue, suggest a process of sexual reversion in the species, which have to be further studied. Low capture and sexual maturity sizes, as well as the low density of organisms found during the present work, might be the product of high fishery pressure, habitat modifications, and pollution processes in the area, factors that have to be studied in detail in order to implement management strategies for the species.

            Pesquería y crecimiento de la piangua (Arcoida: Arcidae) Anadara tuberculosa en la Bahía de Málaga del Pacífico colombiano, 2005-2007

            The fisheries and growth of Ark Clams (Arcoida: Arcidae) Anadara tuberculosa in Málaga Bay, Colombian Pacific, 2005-2007. A. tuberculosa, is the most important bivalve species under exploitation in Colombia. Here, this species is found from Cabo Corrientes (Chocó) to the Ecuador border, in muddy substrates of mangrove forests. In order to determine the growth and the state of fisheries of A. tuberculosa, between December 2005 and April 2007, both, biological (in situ) and commercial studies were performed at Bahia Malaga (Colombian Pacific). The growth was estimated using the general equation of von Bertalanffy, with prior application of the methods of Bhattacharya and Powell-Wetherall. Mortality and exploitation rate were determined using the inverse model of von Bertalanffy. For the biological samplings, a total of 446 individuals of A. tuberculosa (0.64±0.13 individuals/m²) and 53 individuals (0.05±0.049 individuals/m²) of Anadara similis were collected. 79% of the catch was below 51mm. In the commercial samplings, 836 individuals of A. tuberculosa (size range: 31.1-92.2mm) were measured, but no A. similis samples were available for this. Recruitment of A. tuberculosa was higher during March, May, July and November. According to the data, A. tuberculosa might be reproducing during December, February, April and August. The data gathered with the biological samples were more reliable on explaining the growth of A. tuberculosa (K=0.332per year, L∞=88.256mm, t0=0.0556years) than the one taken from market samples (K =0.256per year, L∞=89.77mm, t0=0733years). The high exploitation rate (77%), the low density and the high mortality suggest that A. tuberculosa is in overexploitation state in Bahia Malaga and management strategies are urgently required
