      Effect of different endodontic sealers on push-out bond strength of fiber posts

          Abstract

          <p>Despite the increasing demand for fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) posts, their bonding to root canals is still subject to debate. Endodontic sealers may affect the bond strength between fiber posts and root canal dentin. Aim: To compare the effects of different sealers on fiber post bond strength. Methods: Sixty teeth were divided into 4 groups according to obturation method: GI, gutta-percha without any sealers; GII, gutta-percha and AH26 resin-based sealer; GIII, RealSeal point and RealSeal resin-based sealer, GIV, Guttaflow. Fiber posts were cemented into root canals. Specimens were sectioned, and the bond strength was measured in the middle area. The failure mode was evaluated. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and post hoc test. Results: The highest bond strength was observed in the control group (2.95±1.12), and the least was in the Guttaflow group (1.15±0.78). There was a significant difference between bond strengths of the control and Guttaflow groups and between AH26 and Guttaflow groups (p<0.05). The failure mode was mainly adhesive between dentin and resin cement in all groups. Conclusions: Sealers may have a negative effect on the bond strength of fiber posts to root canal dentin.</p>

          The restoration of endodontically treated teeth is a topic that is extensively studied and yet remains controversial from many perspectives. This article reviews the major pertinent literature on this topic, with an emphasis on major decision-making elements in post placement and restoration of endodontically treated teeth. Recommendations are made for treatment planning, materials, and clinical practices from restorative and endodontic perspectives.

            Monoblocks in root canals: a hypothetical or a tangible goal.

            The term monoblock has become familiar in the endodontic literature with recent interest in the application of dentin adhesive technology to endodontics. Endodontic monoblocks have generated controversial discussions among academicians and clinicians as to whether they are able to improve the quality of seal in root fillings and to strengthen roots. This review attempts to provide a broader meaning to the term monoblock and to see how this definition may be applied to the materials that have been used in the past and present for rehabilitation of the root canal space. The potential of currently available bondable materials to achieve mechanically homogeneous units with root dentin is then discussed in relation to the classical concept in which the term monoblock was first employed in restorative dentistry and subsequently in endodontics.

              Critical evaluation of the push-out test for root canal filling materials.

              The push-out test has been widely used in experimental endodontics but has been criticized on technical grounds particularly because the soft-core material undergoes plastic deformation under load. This study systematically evaluated the technique by comparing push-out strength and load profiles in relation to core material stiffness, canal diameter, punch diameter, sample orientation, and mode of failure.
