Nozzle bodies in highest loaded diesel injection systems are exposed to steady increasing application temperatures, which are not more sustained by case-hardened components. To meet these requirements, nozzle bodies of nitrided hot-working tool steel were developed, which can be applied at temperatures up to 450 °C.
The strong tendency to surface passivation of hot-working tool steel as well as the preliminary manufacturing steps with electrochemical removal required the application of a gas oxynitriding process. An oxygen probe is used for the control of the oxidation potential in the ammonia-water atmosphere. To enable the reduction of compound layer thickness, the nitriding potential is controlled by a hydrogen sensor.
