          Abstract

Abstract Filariasis is caused by nematodes in the blood. Mansonella ozzardi is one of the aetiological agents widely distributed in the Americas and the Caribbean. The case is presented on a paediatric patient previously diagnosed with T-cell anaplastic large cell lymphoma. As part of the evaluation before the second cycle B chemotherapy, a peripheral blood smear was performed, in which were found microfilaria, identified as Mansonella ozzardi. The treatment was a single dose of ivermectin, with a negative result being obtained at 24 hours. The patient is currently asymptomatic and with no evidence of recurrence of the parasitaemia, and able to finish the cancer treatment.

Sustained clearance of Mansonella ozzardi infection after treatment with ivermectin in the Brazilian Amazon.

Therapy for mansonelliasis is challenging because there is no standard drug recommended for its treatment. This non-randomized study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a single dose of 0.15 mg/kg of ivermectin to reduce Mansonella ozzardi microfilaraemia in infected persons. A total of 74 patients were studied within the municipality of Lábrea, which is located in Amazonas State, Brazil. The patients were treated with ivermectin after detection of the parasite by blood examination. Significant microfilaraemia reduction was observed and its residual effect was maintained for at least 12 months. There was no significant change in the laboratory blood count, hepatic metabolites, and nitrogen-bounding compound excreta dosage values that could compromise the use of this drug, demonstrating that ivermectin has a low toxicity level.

Microfilariae in association with neoplastic lesions: report of five cases.

Microfilariae and adult filarial worms have occasionally been detected in association with neoplastic lesions in cytological smears. The presence of microfilariae along with neoplasms is generally regarded as a chance association, yet some authors suggest that such parasitic infestations may be a causative factor for tumourigenesis. There are only a few reported cases in cytology literature documenting this association. We report the presence of microfilariae in routine cytology smears from one benign and four malignant tumours. Microfilariae could not be identified on histopathology available in four of these cases.

Microfilaria in cytological smears at rare sites coexisting with unusual pathology: A series of seven cases

Filariasis is a major public health problem in India and microfilaria is sometimes seen during routine fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) smears, but it is very rare to find microfilaria coexistent with neoplastic lesions. Here we report a series of seven cases in which microfilaria is associated with neoplastic lesions. Out of these seven cases one is benign and six are malignant. Also we first time report the microfilaria coexistent with parotid pleomorphic adenoma, undifferentiated carcinoma thyroid and gall bladder carcinoma.
