          Abstract

Chiral perturbation theory is nowadays a well-established approach to incorporate the chiral constraints from QCD. Nevertheless, for systems involving one baryon, the power counting which dictates the chiral order of observables is not as simple and consensual as in the purely mesonic case. The heavy baryon approach, which relies on a non-relativistic expansion around the limit of infinitely heavy baryon, recovers the usual power counting but destroys some analytic properties of the scattering amplitude. Some years ago, Becher and Leutwyler proposed a Lorentz-invariant formulation of chiral perturbation theory that maintains the required analytic properties, but at the expense of a less intuitive power counting. Aware of the shortcomings of the heavy baryon formalism, the S\~ao Paulo group derived the two-pion exchange component of the nucleon-nucleon potential in line with the works of Becher and Leutwyler. A striking result was that the long distance properties of the potential is determined by the specific low energy region of the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude where the heavy baryon expansion fails. In this talk I will discuss the origin of such failure and how it reflects in the asymptotics of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. Some results for phase shifts and deuteron properties will be shown, followed by a comparison with the heavy baryon predictions.

Chiral 2pi exchange at order four and peripheral NN scattering

            , (2002)
We calculate the impact of the complete set of two-pion exchange contributions at chiral order four (also known as next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order, N3LO) on peripheral partial waves of nucleon-nucleon scattering. Our calculations are based upon the analytical studies by Kaiser. It turns out that the contribution of order four is substantially smaller than the one of order three, indicating convergence of the chiral expansion. We compare the prediction from chiral pion-exchange with the corresponding one from conventional meson-theory as represented by the Bonn Full Model and find, in general, good agreement. Our calculations provide a sound basis for investigating the issue whether the low-energy constants determined from pi-N lead to reasonable predictions for NN.

Determination of the chiral coupling constants c3 and c4 in new pp and np partial-wave analyses

              , , (2003)
As a first result of two new partial-wave analyses, one of the pp and another one of the np scattering data below 500 MeV, we report a study of the long-range chiral two-pion exchange interaction which contains the chiral coupling constants c1, c3, and c4. By using as input a theoretical value for c1 we are able to determine in pp as well as in np scattering accurate values for c3 and c4. The values determined from the pp data and independently from the np data are in very good agreement, indicating the correctness of the chiral two-pion exchange interaction. The weighted averages are c3 = -4.78(10) / GeV and c4 = 3.96(22) / GeV, where the errors are statistical. The value of c3 is best determined from the pp data and that of c4 from the np data.
