          ABSTRACT

Many publishers believe that journal subscriptions are being cancelled in favour of purchasing the occasional article through document delivery (docdel) and interlibrary loan (ILL) services. This brief review suggests that commercial docdel is not necessarily the threat it is perceived to be by publishers, and that instead a co‐operative campaign to eliminate what for them is the real ogre of interlibrary loan (ILL) would be financially beneficial to journal publishers.
