RESUMEN Introducción: los conocimientos, actitudes y práctica sobre salud bucal en la población infantil juegan un papel fundamental para incrementar la salud bucal y la repercusión de la misma en la salud general de los niños. Objetivo: identificar los conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas de salud bucal en los niños de cuarto grado de la escuela primaria Héroes de Yaguajay. Métodos: se realizó un estudio observacional descriptivo de corte transversal de enero a junio del 2021, con un universo de 59 niños de cuarto grado de la escuela primaria Héroes de Yaguajay, no se realizó selección muestral. Se estudiaron las variables: conocimientos generales de salud bucal (suficientes, medio, insuficientes), actitudes de salud bucal (favorables, no favorables) y prácticas de salud bucal (suficientes, medio, insuficientes). Se utilizaron métodos del nivel teórico (histórico-lógico, analítico-sintético, inductivo-deductivo y el enfoque sistémico), empírico (encuesta, entrevista estructurada) y estadístico-matemático. Resultados: el 45,8 % de los niños presentaron insuficientes niveles de conocimientos de salud bucal, solo el 13,5 % tenían conocimientos suficientes. El 66,1 % con actitudes desfavorables y el 47,4 % con prácticas insuficientes. Conclusiones: se constató los deficientes conocimientos y prácticas, actitudes desfavorables de salud bucal en los escolares, por lo que se evidencia la necesidad de aplicar un Programa Educativo de Salud Bucal en los niños de cuarto grado de la escuela primaria Héroe de Yaguajay, en el ámbito escolar.
ABSTRACT Introduction: knowledge, attitudes and practice on oral health in the child population play a fundamental role in increasing oral health and its impact on the general health of children. Objective: to identify the knowledge, attitudes and practices of oral health in fourth grade children of the Héroes de Yaguajay elementary school. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out from January to June 2021, with a universe of 59 fourth-grade children from the Héroes de Yaguajay elementary school, no sample selection was made. The variables were studied: general knowledge about oral health (sufficient, average, insufficient), attitudes about oral health (favorable, unfavorable) and oral health practices (sufficient, average, insufficient). Methods of the theoretical level (historical-logical, analytical-synthetic, inductive-deductive and the systemic approach), empirical (survey, structured interview) and statistical-mathematical were used. Results: 45,8 % of the children presented an insufficient level of knowledge of oral health, only 13,5 % had sufficient knowledge. 66,1 % with unfavorable attitudes and 47,4 % with insufficient practices. Conclusions: the deficient knowledge and practices, unfavorable attitudes about oral health of the schoolchildren were verified, for which the need to apply an Educational Program of Oral Health in the fourth-grade schoolchildren of the Héroe de Yaguajay elementary school, in the area of school.
