          Abstract

Psychological Assessment for Incarcerated Violent and Sexual Offenders: A Complete Survey of the Diagnostical Practice in Social Therapy Units in Germany

Abstract. Social therapy units (STUs) in penal institutions provide intensive treatment for sexual and violent offenders, aimed at reducing their recidivism risk. The risk–need–responsivity model (RNR model) is the most widely established model of offender rehabilitation; the current state of research indicated that treatment following the RNR model is the most effective method of intervention. Psychological assessment plays a key role in the implementation of the RNR model in planning and monitoring the start, the process, and the end of treatment. The main aim of the present study was to empirically examine the current use of psychodiagnostic procedures in STUs in Germany by conducting a complete survey of all 71 STUs in 2016. Of all 71 STUs, 62 conducted initial diagnostic procedures, 50 conducted process diagnostic procedures, and 36 conducted final diagnostic procedures. The initial diagnostical process was predominantly standardized, whereas process and final diagnostics rarely followed a standardized scheme. Risk assessment instruments were used most frequently, and – generally speaking – current psychological assessment practices in STUs followed predominantly the RNR model.

A survey of psychological test use patterns among forensic psychologists.

Clinical psychologists are frequently called on to testify in court regarding mental health issues in civil or criminal cases. One of the legal criteria by which admissibility of testimony is determined includes whether the testimony is based on methods that have gained "general acceptance" in their field. In this study, we sought to evaluate the psychological tests used in forensic assessments by members of the American Psychology-Law Society Division of the American Psychological Association, and by diplomates in the American Board of Forensic Psychology. We present test results from this survey, based on 152 respondents, for forensic evaluations conducted with adults using multiscale inventories, single-scale tests, unstructured personality tests, cognitive and/or intellectual tests, neuropsychological tests, risk assessment and psychopathy instruments, sex offender risk assessment instruments, competency or sanity-related instruments, and instruments used to evaluate malingering. In addition, we provide findings for psychological testing involving child-related forensic issues.
