          Abstract

          A identificação do impacto que certas formas de estresse causam ao bem estar animal e equilíbrio orgânico, representa um desafio á adoção de boas práticas de criação. Assim, a presente pesquisa verificou o impacto de um desafio doloroso rotineiro dos bovinos na imunidade pulmonar e sistêmica. Avaliou-se hemograma e cortisol, em quatro momentos, sendo M1, M6, M7 e M8 (respectivamente sete dias antes e um, três e oito dias depois do desafio doloroso) e citologia broncolaveolar, obtida por broncoscopia, nos momentos M1, M6 e M8. Houve uma redução dos valores do eritrograma no primeiro dia após o desafio, compatível com anaplasmose e agravada pela perda de sangue durante a cirurgia e um influxo de leucócitos para a região pulmonar. Oito dias após o desafio, evidenciou-se aumento de cortisol, gerando uma leucocitose por neutrofilia e monocitose no sangue com provável redução de quimiotaxia para o pulmão, tornando o trato respiratório potencialmente mais susceptível a infecções, sugerindo que esta prática de manejo, mesmo acompanhado de protocolo analgésico, pode ser considerada um fator de risco a penumonias afetando o bem estar animal.

          Translated abstract

          The recognition of the impact of certains forms of stress in the animal well being and organic equilibrium, represents a challenge to the adoption of good practices. Thus, this research verified the impact of a painful rotine of the cattle husbandry can cause on pulmonary and systemic immunity. Was evaluated hemogram and cortisol, in four moments, being M1, M6, M7 e M8 (respectively seven days before and one, three and eight days after the painful challenge) and bronchoalveolar cytology,obtained by bronchoscopy, in the moments of M1, M6 e M8. There was a reduction of the erythrogram values in the first day after the challenge, compatible with the anaplasmosis and aggravated by the blood loss during the surgery and an influx of leukocytes to the pulmonary region. Eight days after the challenge, became evident the cortisol increase, enerating leukocytosis by neutrophilia and monocytosis in the blood with a probable reduction of chemotaxis to the lungs, turning the respiratory tract potentially more susceptible to infections, suggesting that this practice, even accompanied by analgesic protocol, increases the risk of pneumonia, affecting the animal well-being.

          Cyclic rickettsemia during persistent Anaplasma marginale infection of cattle.

          Submicroscopic levels of Anaplasma marginale rickettsemia in persistently infected cattle were determined by using nucleic acid hybridization. Within individuals, the rickettsemia levels steadily increased from less than 10(4) infected erythrocytes per ml to a peak of more than 10(6) infected erythrocytes per ml and then rapidly declined. This logarithmic variation parallels the variation of the rickettsemia level seen in acute infection and suggests that cyclic emergence of antigenic variants is a mechanism of rickettsial persistence.

            Administration of anesthetic and analgesic prevent the suppression of many leukocyte responses following surgical castration and physical dehorning.

            The objectives of the current research were to determine the physiological effects and responses of many leukocytes following surgical castration and/(or) physical dehorning and the influence of anesthetics and analgesics in 3-month-old calves. Eighty 3-month-old Holstein bull calves were completely randomized to treatments in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with castration, dehorning, and anesthetic/analgesic as the main effects. Peripheral blood samples were collected just before (0) and 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6, 24, and 72 h after the respective procedure(s) and analyzed for total leukocyte and differential counts, as well as plasma cortisol and haptoglobin concentrations. Blood from the 0, 0.5 and 24h collections were analyzed for many ex vivo leukocyte responses. Data were analyzed using a repeated measures analysis of variance with the fixed effects of treatment, time, and the interaction of treatment × time. Pre-planned contrasts were performed to determine the effect of (1) management procedure (castration and/(or) dehorning), (2) anesthetic/analgesic, and (3) were the management procedures additive. There were treatment × time interactions (P 0.23). Castration and dehorning effects of plasma haptoglobin concentrations tended (P=0.10) to be additive at 72 h after the procedure(s). Prior administration of local anesthetic and a systemic analgesic attenuated (P<0.001) the cortisol response and prevented (P=0.03) the observed leukocytosis, neutrophilia, and leukocyte suppression. These data suggest that calves should be castrated and dehorned on the same day rather than spreading them out across two days and calves should be administered pain relief prior to performing either procedure.

              Animal welfare education: development and prospects.

              Animal welfare has developed rapidly as a scientific discipline since the 1980s. Concepts have been refined, methodologies for assessment developed, and links made to other areas of science. Changes in the subject and in its teaching are required. Since 1986, a series of senior academic teaching posts in the subject have been created, especially in the last 10 years. Veterinary and animal science students should receive a specific course on animal welfare, in addition to mention of the subject in other courses. In the future, more allusion to developments in understanding of welfare in relation to disease and brain measures of welfare is likely. The central role of animal welfare in veterinary and animal science teaching will become more firmly established.
