          Abstract

          Com o objetivo de comparar a duração do período embrionário, a fecundidade e a fertilidade de Biomphalaria occidentalis Paraense, 1981 com a de B, tenagophila (d'Orbigny, 1835), exemplares de ambas as espécies foram criados em aquários dotados das mesmas características. Os ovos depostos pelos caramujos foram contados sob lupa binocular e seu desenvolvimento embrionário foi observado até a eclosão. Assim foi obtido o número total de posturas e de ovos por caramujo, bem como o número total de ovos eclodidos por postura para cada período de trinta dias, ou seja, a taxa de eclosão por período. O experimento teve a duração de doze meses e os resultados obtidos são válidos para condições de laboratório.

          Translated abstract

          Specimens of Biomphalaria occidentalis and Biomphalaria tenagophila were reared in S.Paulo, Brazil under laboratory conditions, with a view to know their biological characteristics. Oviposition and eggs/oviposition ratio were recorded over twelve months so as to obtain information on the number of egg-masses per animal and the number of eggs per egg-mass, as also the number of hatched eggs per egg-mass for each period of 30 days, i.e., the hatching-rate per period. The incubation period was about the same for both species, but the oviposition and egg oviposition ratio were greater in B. tenagophila.

          Biomphalaria occidentalis sp.n. from South America (Mollusca basommatophora pulmonata)

          A new species of South American planorbid snail, Biomphalaria occidentalis, is described. It is indistinguishable from B. tenagophila (Orbigny, 1835), by the characteristics of the shell and of most organs of the genital system. In B. tenagophila there is a pouch on the ventral wall of the vagina (Fig. 4A, vp), absent in B. occidentalis (Fig. 3A), and on the ventral wall of the vagina (Fig. 4A, vp), absent in B. occidentalis (Fig. 3A), and the prepuce is much wider than the penial sheath, its width increasing distalward (Fig. 4, ps,pp), whereas in B. occidentalis the prepuce is wider than the penial sheath but keeps about the same width all along (Fig.3, ps, pp). The two species are biologically separate by absolute reproductive isolation. The geographical distribution of B. occidentalis is shown in Fig. 14. So far it has been found in the Brazilian states of Acre, Amazonas (?), Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná, and in Paraguay. Its type-locality is Campo Grande, state of Mato Grosso do sul, where it was collected from several biotopes related to affluents of the Aquiduana river, chiefly Córrego Prosa and Córrego Ceroula. Specimens were deposited in the following malacological collections: Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janeiro; Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia; Museum of Zoology, University of Michigan; and British Museum (Natural History).

              Unsusceptibility of Biomphalaria occidentalis to infection with a strain of Schistosoma mansoni

              Susceptibility experiments with 1582 specimens of Biomphalaria occidentalis, 3-6 mm in shell diameter, from 10 localities of the states of Mato Groso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and São Paulo, exposed individually to 5 miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni (SJ2 strain), gave negative results. B. tenagophila from Joinville (Santa Catarina) and Taubaté (São Paulo), used as controls, showed infection rates of 17.9% and 14.8%, respectively. Experiments with other strains of S. mansoni are in progress. If the present results are confirmed, expansion of schistosomiasis toward far-western Brazil through the agency of B. occidentalis becomes less probable. Experiências de suscetibilidade com 1582 espécimes de Biomphalaria occidentalis, medindo 3-6 mm de diâmetro, de 10 localidades dos Estados de Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná e São Paulo, expostos individualmente a cinco miracídios de Schistosoma mansoni (cepa S12), deram resultados negativos. Como controles foram usados exemplares de B. tenagophila de Joinville (Santa Catarina) e Taubaté (São Paulo), apresentaram índices de infecção de 17.9% e 14.8%, respectivamente. Estão em andamento experiências com outras cepas de S. mansoni. Se os resultados atuais forem confirmados, torna-se menos provável uma contribuição da B. occidentalis para a expansão da xistosomose em direção ao extremo oeste do Brasil.
