          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Abstract: During the last half of the nineteenth century and early in the next one, many Mexican and foreign travelers arrived in Tzintzuntzan to look at a portrait kept in the local church, which was believed to have been painted by the Renaissance artist Tiziano Vecellio. The news was spread around the world thanks to the memories published by some travelers and to many newspaper articles. This study focuses on two topics that made this painting a legend: its alleged authorship and its mysterious disappearance.
