          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Abstract The green algae (Chlorophyta, Ulvophyceae) recorded in the literature and specimens at herbaria from the littoral of Michoacan were extensively reviewed. Additionally, these data were supplemented with sampling in 10 localities from 2006 to 2014. A total of 56 infrageneric taxa of green algae (52 species, 3 varieties and 1 subspecies) were determined; from these, 33 were new records from Michoacan, being Blidingia minima var. vexata, Bryopsis pennata var. secunda, Cladophora crispula and Ulva chaetomorphoides new records for the Tropical Pacific coast of Mexico. The family Cladophoraceae was the best represented with 15 taxa, followed by Ulvaceae with 10. From the previous 32 records in the study area the presence of 23 records was confirmed, so the number of Ulvophyceae from this coast increased from 32 to 65 taxa. The floristic list is accompanied by data of presence, seasonality, reproduction, habitat and bibliographic references. Species diversity was compared between the dry and rainy seasons during 2006 to 2014, the greatest diversity was found during the dry season. The coast of Michoacán has the highest specific richness of Chlorophyta compared to other states such as Nayarit, Colima, Jalisco, Guerrero and Chiapas.

Effects and outcomes of Caribbean hurricanes in a climate change scenario.

            J. E. Lugo (2000)
Hurricanes are complex disturbance systems with significant effects on vegetation and built-up land. This paper summarizes research on the effects and outcomes of hurricanes on Caribbean forests. Twelve effects and outcome topics are presented: sudden and massive tree mortality; delayed patterns of tree mortality; alternative methods of forest regeneration; opportunities for a change in successional direction; high species turnover and opportunities for species change in forests; diversity of age classes; faster biomass and nutrient turnover; species substitutions and changes in turnover time of biomass and nutrients; lower aboveground biomass in mature vegetation; carbon sinks; selective pressure on organisms; and convergence of community structure and organization. Effects of hurricanes on urban systems are also discussed. While there is scientific uncertainty as to whether hurricane frequencies and intensity will change as a result of global climate change, available understanding on the effects and outcomes of hurricanes can be used to anticipate possible effects of either increasing or decreasing hurricane frequency and intensity. Proposed mitigation actions and research priorities can be effective and desirable even if the frequency and intensity of hurricanes remains unchanged.
