          Abstract

          Translated abstract

This paper examines the potential consequences of teenage motherhood in the transition to adulthood focusing on two main aspects of women's life trajectories: education and work. The study is of qualitative nature and does not pretend to be a statistical assessment, but to develop a richer and more complex understanding of the impact of adolescent pregnancy on the already restricted options that poor urban women have in Paraguay. From the analysis and comparison of life histories and experiences across adolescent mothers and women who had delayed the birth of their first child until after adolescence, this paper aims to identify the ways and extent in which early motherhood influences educational and work trajectories.

Marriage and childbirth as factors in dropping out from school: an analysis of DHS data from sub-Saharan Africa.

Leaving school prematurely is often claimed to be among the most negative consequences of early marriage and pregnancy for girls in less developed countries. However, an analysis of the relative frequency with which these events actually occur or are named as reasons for leaving school reveals that, at least in the case of francophone Africa, they explain no more than 20 per cent of dropouts. To the extent that demographic events trump school or family factors as determinants of school-leaving, our data indicate that it is union formation--defined by the DHS as first marriage or cohabitation--rather than childbirth that is more likely to have this effect. 'Schoolgirl pregnancy' typically accounts for only between 5 and 10 per cent of girls' departures from school. Furthermore, the risks of leaving school because of pregnancy or marriage have declined over time with the decline in rates of early marriage and childbearing.

Reevaluating the costs of teenage childbearing.

Teenage childbearing in the United States has long been regarded as an important social problem with substantial costs to teen mothers and their children. Recently, however, several researchers have argued that the apparent negative effects of teenage childbearing primarily reflect unmeasured family background rather than the true consequences of a teen birth. To distinguish the effect of teen childbearing from that of family background, we use data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and compare teen mothers with their sisters. We find that accounting for unobserved family background reduces, but does not eliminate, the estimated consequences of early childbearing. Statistically significant and quantitatively important effects of teen parenthood remain for high school graduation, family size, and economic well-being.
