          Abstract

          RESUMO: Objetivo: investigar a percepção de pais/responsáveis de crianças com desvio fonológico em relação ao próprio desvio e terapia fonoaudiológica aplicada. Métodos: a amostra foi composta por 23 pais/responsáveis de crianças com diagnóstico de desvio fonológico, atendidas em um ambulatório de Fonoaudiologia. Para a análise das entrevistas coletadas utilizou-se a Análise de Conteúdo. Resultados: em síntese, merecem atenção: (a) a aceitabilidade ao atendimento fonoaudiológico, inclusive, em muitos sendo de própria iniciativa dos pais/responsáveis a procura pela fonoterapia; (b) esses referem perceber a dificuldade linguística de seus filhos, bem como, as evoluções na sua fala; (c) enumeram, com maior ocorrência, os problemas escolares e o bullying como dificuldades relacionadas ao desvio fonológicoe, também, como sua preocupação decorrente do mesmo; (d) sugerem mais frequentemente a busca pelo atendimento fonoaudiológico a outros pais; (e) dizem contribuir no ambiente familiar para com a terapia fonoaudiológica e; (f) mesmo não tão frequente, alguns mencionam ter dúvida quanto ao tempo de terapia. Conclusão: desse modo, os pais/responsáveis expuseram suas concepções acerca de sua experiência relacionada à dificuldade de fala e à terapia fonoaudiológica. Acredita-se em uma contribuição para a reflexão dos procedimentos terapêuticos adotados na fonoterapia, bem como, para o amadurecimento da relação terapeuta-paciente e terapeuta-pais. Por esse motivo, incentiva-se a inclusão e aproximação dos cuidadores na terapia, com o intuito de ampliar a adesão e contribuição desses para a superação da dificuldade de fala.

          Translated abstract

          ABSTRACT: Purpose: investigating the perceptions of parents/guardians of children with phonological disorder in relation to the own disorder and the applied speech therapy. Methods: the sample consisted of 23 parents/guardians of children with speech disorder, who were taken care in a speech therapy ambulatory. For the analysis of the collected interviews, it was used the Content Analysis. Results: in summary, some points deserve attention: (a) the acceptability of the speech therapy services, including, in many cases being the demand for speech therapy an initiative of the own parents/guardians; (b) these ones perceive the linguistic difficulty of their children, as well the developments in his speech; (c) they list, with higher occurrence, school problems and bullying as difficulties related to phonological disorder and also their concern regarding it, (d) they often suggest more searches for speech therapy services to other parents, (e) they say they contribute in the family atmosphere with the speech therapy, and (f) even not so frequent, they mention to have some doubt in relation to the time of therapy. Conclusion: this way, parents/guardians exposed their views about their experience related to the difficulty of speech and language therapy. So, we believe in a contribution to the reflection of the therapeutic procedures adopted in speech therapy, as well as to the maturing of the therapist-patient relationship and therapist-parents. Therefore, it encourages the inclusion and closeness to caregivers in therapy.

            The percentage of consonants correct (PCC) metric: extensions and reliability data.

            Research in normal and disordered phonology requires measures of speech production that are biolinguistically appropriate and psychometrically robust. Their conceptual and numeric properties must be well characterized, particularly because speech measures are increasingly appearing in large-scale epidemiologic, genetic, and other descriptive-explanatory database studies. This work provides a rationale for extensions to an articulation competence metric titled the Percentage of Consonants Correct [PCC; Shriberg & Kwiatkowski, 1982; Shriberg, Kwiatkowski, Best, Hengst, & Terselic-Weber, 1986], which is computed from a 5- to 10-minute conversational speech sample. Reliability and standard error of measurement estimates are provided for 9 of a set of 10 speech metric including the PCC. Discussion includes rationale for selecting one or more of the 10 metrics for specific clinical and research needs.

              Cognitive and environmental predictors of early literacy skills

              Not all young children benefit from book exposure in preschool age. It is claimed that the ability to hold information in mind (short-term memory), to ignore distraction (inhibition), and to focus attention and stay focused (sustained attention) may have a moderating effect on children’s reactions to the home literacy environment. In a group of 228 junior kindergarten children with a native Dutch background, with a mean age of 54.29 months (SD = 2.12 months), we explored therefore the relationship between book exposure, cognitive control and early literacy skills. Parents filled in a HLE questionnaire (book sharing frequency and an author recognition checklist as indicator of parental leisure reading habits), and children completed several tests in individual sessions with the researcher (a book-cover recognition test, PPVT, letter knowledge test, the subtests categories and patterns of the SON, and cognitive control measures namely digit span of the KABC, a peg tapping task and sustained attention of the ANT). Main findings were: (1) Children’s storybook knowledge mediated the relationship between home literacy environment and literacy skills. (2) Both vocabulary and letter knowledge were predicted by book exposure. (3) Short-term memory predicted vocabulary over and above book exposure. (4) None of the cognitive control mechanisms moderated the beneficial effects of book exposure.
