          Abstract

SIGNIFICANCE: Anti-black African xenophobia is a pressing issue in South Africa, from the streets to our universities. Physical threats against honest university administrators and non-nationals have become legion. Yet foreign academics and teachers contribute directly to local education and employment which would be much poorer without them. This Commentary, which reports on a Roundtable discussion of this issue, explores the form of this prejudice, the consequences for the institutions and individuals concerned, and the implications for South African glocalisation
