Abstract

Este ensaio procura elaborar uma relação entre dois intelectuais atuantes em um período fundante da historiografia brasileira durante as primeiras décadas do século XX: Euclides da Cunha e Gilberto Freyre. O eixo norteador do texto é o papel de Freyre como leitor de Euclides da Cunha, analisando a forma como a obra deste foi recebida por aquele. Defende-se a hipótese que a feitura do primeiro livro do autor pernambucano, Casa-grande & senzala (1933), foi fortemente marcada pelas características do livro maior de Euclides, Os sertões (1902).

Translated abstract

This essay aims to establish a relationship between two active intellectuals in an important period of the Brazilian historiography during the first decades of the XX century: Euclides da Cunha and Gilberto Freyre. The guidelines of the text are the role of Freyre as a reader of Euclides da Cunha, analyzing how the work of the latter was received by the first. It is supported that the hypothesis of the making of the mentioned author's first book, Casa-Grande & Senzala (1933), was strongly marked by the characteristics of the greatest book by Euclides, Os sertões (1902).
