          Abstract

          Adultos de Periplaneta americana L. se evaluaron bajo condiciones de laboratorio para verificar la intoxicación indirecta (por canibalismo) por acción de un cebo tóxico con base en imidacloprid (2,15%). La mortalidad presentada por ingestión directa e indirecta (vía canibalismo) del cebo varió entre 97-100%. El tiempo letal medio de especímenes que consumieron el cebo directamente fue menor (11,012 h) y significativamente diferente que los que lo consumieron indirectamente (65,88-96.70 h). De igual forma el tiempo letal medio de "kriock down" de especímenes que ingirieron el cebo directamente fue menor (0,07 h) y significativamente diferente a los tiempos promedio de "knock down" de aquellos que lo adquirieron de manera indirecta, 7,98 h para aquellos que ingerían el tóxico de un individuo envenenado 24 h antes de los ensayos y 10,23 para aquellos que ingerían el tóxico de un individuo envenenado 24 h antes de los ensayos. Los resultados obtenidos comprobaron la hipótesis de que la molécula de imidacloprid es capaz de afectar a especímenes de forma indirecta (vía canibalismo).

          Translated abstract

          Adults of Periplaneta americana L. were evaluated under laboratory conditions to verify indirect poisoning (by cannibalism) through action of a toxic bait base on imidacloprid (2,15%). The mortality caused by direct and indirect ingestion (througfl cannibalism) of the bait varied between 97-IOO%. The average lethal time of specimens that consumed the bait directly was less (11,012 h) and significantly different than those that consumed it indirectly (65,88-96,70 h). Sirnilarly, the average lethal knock down time of specimens that directly ingested the bait was less (0,07 h) and significantly different from average knocK down times of those that acquired it indirectly, 7,98 h for those that ingested the toxin of an individual poisoned 4 h before the tests and 10,23 h from those that ingested the toxin of an individual poisoned 24 h before the tests. The results obtained support the hypothesis that the imidacloprid molecule is able to affect specimens in an indirect way (through cannibalism).

              Cockroach surveys in 14 provinces of Thailand.

              Cockroach surveys using sticky traps were conducted in urban areas of 14 Thailand provinces. At least 30 houses in each province were randomly sampled for cockroaches. Each house was trapped in three areas: kitchen, bedroom and outside. A total of 2,648 cockroaches was caught by 550 out of 1,542 traps (35.7%), from 337 of the 514 houses (65.6%). Overall, relative density ranged from 2.6 to 9.1 with an average of 5.2 cockroaches/house. On the average, 47.7% of the cockroaches were caught in the kitchen, 24.4% and 27.9% were caught in the bedroom and outside of dwellings, respectively. There were 10 species of cockroaches caught from the 14 provinces: Periplaneta americana (60.9%), Periplaneta brunnea (15.4%), Neostylopyga rhombiofolia (9.6%), Periplaneta australasiae (9.2%), Pycnoscelis surinamensis (3.3%), Blatella germanica (0.6%), Periplaneta fuliginosa (0.5%), Supella longipalpa (0.3%), Blatella lituricollis (0.15%) and Nauphoeta cinerea (0.05%), belonging to six genera. According to the surveys in this study, Periplaneta americana and Periplaneta brunnea were the most abundant cockroach species in urban Thailand, whereas the kitchen was the major habitat.
