          Abstract

          Amaranthus dubius es una maleza frecuente en los cultivos de Phaseolus vulgaris en los estados centrales y occidentales de Venezuela. Para evaluar el efecto de la interferencia sobre el crecimiento de ambas especies creciendo en diferentes proporciones relativas en un modelo de series de reemplazo, se usó la metodología del análisis de crecimiento funcional. El experimento se realizó bajo condiciones de umbráculo en un arreglo completamente al azar con nueve muestreos consecutivos realizados a intervalos de cinco días. Se utilizaron cinco combinaciones de proporciones relativas (4:0, 1:3, 2:2, 3:1 y 0:4) para una densidad total de cuatro plantas por unidad experimental, consistente de recipientes opacos a la luz llenos hasta una profundidad de 18 cm con suelo franco arenoso y un área superficial de 254 cm². En cada muestreo se midió el peso seco de la parte aérea y el área foliar total. Los logaritmos neperianos de estas variables fueron utilizados para calcular, en cada proporción relativa, los valores instantáneos de intensidad de crecimiento relativo (ICR), intensidad de asimilación neta (IAN), razón de área foliar (RAF), razón de peso foliar (RPF) y área foliar especifica (AFE). El cálculo de la duración de área foliar (DAF) se realizó por el método clásico. Los resultados mostraron que el éxito competitivo intrínseco de P. vulgaris sobre A. dubius se debió fundamentalmente a sus mayores valores de DAF, mayor tamaño de semilla y mayor tasa de emergencia y desarrollo de la plántula, mientras que el ICR no fue un buen indicador de la capacidad competitiva de las especies.

          Translated abstract

          Amaranthus dubius is a common weed in crops of Phaseolus vulgaris in the central and western states of Venezuela. To evaluate the effect of interference on the growth of both species growing under different relative proportions in a replacement series model, the functional plant growth analysis methodology was used. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions, in a completely random arrangement with nine consecutive samplings performed at five-day intervals. Five combinations of relative proportions were used (4:0, 1:3, 2:2, 3:1 and 0:4) with a total density of four plants per experimental unit, consisting of a light opaque container filled to a depth of 18 cm with sandy loam and surface area of 254 cm². At each harvest shoot dry weight and total leaf area of both species were measured. The natural logarithms of these variables were used to calculate for each relative proportion, the instantaneous values of relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area ratio (LAR), leaf weight ratio (LWR) and specific leaf area (SLA). The leaf area duration (LAD) was calculated by the classic method. The results showed that intrinsic competitive success of P. vulgaris on A. dubius was mainly due to its higher LAD, higher seed size, and higher rate of emergence and seedling development, while the RGR was not a good indicator of the competitiveness ability of the species.
