      Non-Auxetic Mechanical Metamaterials

          Abstract

          The concept of “mechanical metamaterials” has become increasingly popular, since their macro-scale characteristics can be designed to exhibit unusual combinations of mechanical properties on the micro-scale. The advances in additive manufacturing (AM, three-dimensional printing) techniques have boosted the fabrication of these mechanical metamaterials by facilitating a precise control over their micro-architecture. Although mechanical metamaterials with negative Poisson’s ratios (i.e., auxetic metamaterials) have received much attention before and have been reviewed multiple times, no comparable review exists for architected materials with positive Poisson’s ratios. Therefore, this review will focus on the topology-property relationships of non-auxetic mechanical metamaterials in general and five topological designs in particular. These include the designs based on the diamond, cube, truncated cube, rhombic dodecahedron, and the truncated cuboctahedron unit cells. We reviewed the mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of these architected materials, while considering the effects of other factors such as those of the AM process. In addition, we systematically analyzed the experimental, computational, and analytical data and solutions available in the literature for the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. Compression dominated lattices, such as the (truncated) cube, showed the highest mechanical properties. All of the proposed unit cells showed a normalized fatigue strength below that of solid titanium (i.e., 40% of the yield stress), in the range of 12–36% of their yield stress. The unit cells discussed in this review could potentially be applied in bone-mimicking porous structures.

          Ultralight, ultrastiff mechanical metamaterials.

          The mechanical properties of ordinary materials degrade substantially with reduced density because their structural elements bend under applied load. We report a class of microarchitected materials that maintain a nearly constant stiffness per unit mass density, even at ultralow density. This performance derives from a network of nearly isotropic microscale unit cells with high structural connectivity and nanoscale features, whose structural members are designed to carry loads in tension or compression. Production of these microlattices, with polymers, metals, or ceramics as constituent materials, is made possible by projection microstereolithography (an additive micromanufacturing technique) combined with nanoscale coating and postprocessing. We found that these materials exhibit ultrastiff properties across more than three orders of magnitude in density, regardless of the constituent material.

            Titanium alloys in total joint replacement--a materials science perspective.

            Increased use of titanium alloys as biomaterials is occurring due to their lower modulus, superior biocompatibility and enhanced corrosion resistance when compared to more conventional stainless steels and cobalt-based alloys. These attractive properties were a driving force for the early introduction of alpha (cpTi) and alpha + beta (Ti-6A1-4V) alloys as well as for the more recent development of new Ti-alloy compositions and orthopaedic metastable beta titanium alloys. The later possess enhanced biocompatibility, reduced elastic modulus, and superior strain-controlled and notch fatigue resistance. However, the poor shear strength and wear resistance of titanium alloys have nevertheless limited their biomedical use. Although the wear resistance of beta-Ti alloys has shown some improvement when compared to alpha + beta alloys, the ultimate utility of orthopaedic titanium alloys as wear components will require a more complete fundamental understanding of the wear mechanisms involved. This review examines current information on the physical and mechanical characteristics of titanium alloys used in artifical joint replacement prostheses, with a special focus on those issues associated with the long-term prosthetic requirements, e.g., fatigue and wear.

              Mechanical properties and the hierarchical structure of bone.

              Detailed descriptions of the structural features of bone abound in the literature; however, the mechanical properties of bone, in particular those at the micro- and nano-structural level, remain poorly understood. This paper surveys the mechanical data that are available, with an emphasis on the relationship between the complex hierarchical structure of bone and its mechanical properties. Attempts to predict the mechanical properties of bone by applying composite rule of mixtures formulae have been only moderately successful, making it clear that an accurate model should include the molecular interactions or physical mechanisms involved in transfer of load across the bone material subunits. Models of this sort cannot be constructed before more information is available about the interactions between the various organic and inorganic components. Therefore, further investigations of mechanical properties at the 'materials level', in addition to the studies at the 'structural level' are needed to fill the gap in our present knowledge and to achieve a complete understanding of the mechanical properties of bone.
