          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Physical therapy plays an important role in school, as students develop bad habits and postural dysfunctions which may generate long-term functional restrictions. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of an educational program on students' posture in Garibaldi, RS. Forty-eight 8-to-10 year-old schoolchildren filled up a questionnaire about postural habits and had their knapsacks assessed as to weight, type and carrying mode, before and after an educational session; a further assessment was made four weeks later. Parents participated by answering a questionnaire on children's posture. Results showed positive changes in feet posture in the sitting position (p=0.001); in daily living activities, better postures or habits were found while watching television (p<0.0001), sleeping (p=0.019), getting objects from the ground (p<0.0001), and reading and/or writing in bed (p=0.002). As to knapsack weight, a significant decrease (p=0,002) was noticed after the session, while neither the model or mode of transport changed. Parents answered that their children have good postural habits and keep them on a regular basis. It may thus be said that one session of postural educational program for schoolchildren resulted in better knowledge on healthy postural behaviour and modified some postures, but one can't say it brought about changes in postural habits.

Promoção da saúde e qualidade de vida

          Paulo Buss (2000)

Low back pain in 15- to 16-year-old children in relation to school furniture and carrying of the school bag.

Cross-sectional sample with longitudinal information. To estimate the relationship between the occurrence of low back pain (LBP) and various types of school furniture and anthropometric dimensions in schoolchildren, and physical loading by school bag carrying. Some types of school furniture may be hypothesized to prevent or cause LBP. Despite strong opinions in the public debate about a possible relationship between use of various types of school furniture and LBP, scientific research on this matter is sparse. Five hundred forty-six schoolchildren aged 14 to 17 years answered a questionnaire about sitting positions during school hours and the presence and severity of LBP. Furthermore, the anthropometric dimensions and the weight of the school bags were measured. The types and dimensions of the school furniture were described and measured. In multivariate analyses was adjusted for physical activity and other possible risk factors. More than half of the adolescents experienced LBP during the preceding 3 months, and 24.2% reported reduced daily function or care seeking because of LBP. LBP occurrence was not associated with the types or dimensions of the school furniture or body dimensions, but was positively associated with carrying the school bag on 1 shoulder [OR: 2.06 (1.29-3.31)]. The present study does not support the hypothesis of different types of school furniture being a causative or preventing factor for LBP. Carrying the school bag in an asymmetric manner may play a role.

Back care education in elementary school: a pilot study investigating the complementary role of the class teacher.

This study investigated the efficacy of guidelines for a motivated class teacher to enhance the application of back care principles, taught by a physical therapist, in fifth-grade elementary schoolchildren. Testing consisted of a practical test before and a practical test, knowledge test and candid camera evaluation 11 weeks after the program. Three groups were compared: an intervention group of 38 pupils, with extra guidelines for the teacher, an intervention group of 48 pupils, without extra guidelines and 34 controls. The intervention plus guidelines group, compared to the intervention group without extra teacher guidelines, obtained significantly higher posttest-pretest gain scores for five of the seven practical test items and scored significantly higher for seven of the nine items of the candid camera evaluation. Knowledge test scores did not differ significantly between the two intervention groups. Study results indicate that guidelines to a motivated class teacher improve efficacy of back care education in elementary schoolchildren.
