          Abstract

          El consumo de tabaco fue una de las principales fuentes de ingresos del periodo virreinal, sin embargo, en los primeros años del México independiente la compra-venta registró una estrepitosa caída. Las cifras de ventas de papeles para puros y cajetillas de cigarros en el territorio de Tlaxcala demuestran la disminución superior a 80%. La estructura administrativa encargada de la distribución de los productos derivados del tabaco y los problemas relacionados con el contrabando sustentan la explicación histórica.

          Translated abstract

          Tobacco consumption was one of the main sources of revenue during the Viceroyalty; however, in the early years of Mexican independence purchase-sales of this commodity experienced a drastic decline. The figures on sales of paper for cigars and cigarettes in the territory of Tlaxcala, for example, reflect a reduction that exceeded 80%. The historical explanation posited here stresses two factors: the administrative structure responsible for distributing products derived from tobacco and problems of contraband.

          La consommation de tabac fut une des principales sources de revenus de l'époque vice-royale. Néanmoins, au cours des premières années du Mexique indépendant l'achat-vente connut une chute vertigineuse. Les chiffres de ventes de papier à cigares et de paquets de cigarettes dans le territoire de Tlaxcala enregistrent une baisse supérieure à 80%. La structure administrative chargée de la distribution des produits dérivés du tabac et les problèmes en rapport avec la contrebande soutiennent l'explication historique.
