      Production traits in F 1 and F 2 crosses with naturalized hair breed Santa Inês ewes

          Abstract

          The once bred ewe slaughter method proposes the use of female lamb to produce a lamb and then both are slaughtered, increasing income and high quality meat production. Thus, this study evaluated the growth and reproduction performance of ewe lamb from Santa Inês (SI), a naturalized genetic resource, and their crosses (Dorper x Santa Inês (DOR), Texel x Santa Inês (TEX), Ile de France x Santa Inês (ILE)), as well as the survivability and development of their offspring. The animals were weighed monthly from birth to 12-months age. Samples of milk were collected on approximately 30 days of lactation. The physical-chemical analysis of milk was performed. SI females (2.94 kg) had significantly lower birth weight than DOR (3.80 kg) and TEX (3.87 kg). ILE females had higher weaning weight and weight at 12 months than SI females, which reflected in higher daily weight gain (ADG) (108.46 g/day) than TEX and SI. The pregnancy rates at 12 months were ILE (57.14%), TEX (25%), DOR (50%), and SI (28.57%), with TEX and SI differing of ILE and DOR (p = 0.03). Therefore, in semi-confinement and in a once-bred ewe production system using crossbreeding and allying meat production and reproduction, we recommend the use of Dorper and Ile de France breeds for crossbreeding with Santa Inês females. These results demonstrated the useful of a local genetic resource in productive system aiming a low cost meat production.

          Role of mother-young interactions in the survival of offspring in domestic mammals.

          The defining characteristic of mammals is that females nurse and care for their young; without this, the neonate has no chance to survive. Studies on wild and domestic species show that the neonatal period is the most critical step in the lifetime of a mammal. This review compares three well-studied species (the rabbit, pig and sheep) that differ in their parental strategies and in the problems that neonates have to overcome. As a general trend, mother-young interactions vary according to the maturity of the newborn, and the size of the litter. Neonatal survival relies to a great extent on an environment that is ecologically appropriate for the developmental stage of the neonate, and on optimum interactions with the mother. Adaptive maternal care supposes that the mother provides the basic needs of the neonate: warmth (in pigs and rabbits) or shelter, food, water and immunological protection (via colostrum) and, in some instances, protection from predators and other conspecifics. A major risk facing all neonates, other than the birth process itself, is inadequate colostrum intake owing to delayed suckling or competition with siblings, which leads to starvation, hypothermia or even crushing, as has been observed in pigs.

            Composição do sangue e do leite em ovinos leiteiros do sul do Brasil: variações na gestação e na lactação

            A ovinocultura de leite tem avançado no Rio Grande do Sul nos últimos anos, sem o conhecimento das variações nos parâmetros metabólicos e de composição do leite que possa servir de apoio à pesquisa e à clínica. Este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a variação dos perfis metabólico e hematológico e da composição do leite em ovinos leiteiros da raça Lacaune criados em regime de confinamento na Serra Gaúcha. O trabalho foi realizado no município de Bento Gonçalves (região serrana do RS). Foram coletadas amostras de sangue de 14 animais por venipunção jugular para a realização de hemograma e do perfil bioquímico, em cada uma das seguintes categorias: ovelhas vazias; aos 60, 90 e 120 dias de gestação e aos 7, 30, 60 e 140 dias de lactação. Durante os mesmos períodos da lactação, foram coletadas amostras para a determinação dos componentes físico-químicos do leite. A acidez Dornic e o teor de proteína e gordura do leite foram diferentes dos citados em outros países. O perfil metabólico apresentou maiores variações com relação à média no final da gestação e no início da lactação. A uréia mostrou diferença (P<0,05) entre a gestação e a lactação. Os valores de glicose e fructosamina diminuíram e os de beta-hidroxibutirato aumentaram (P<0,05) no final da gestação. Com o avanço da lactação, houve diminuição da glicose e aumento do colesterol (P<0,05). O fósforo apresentou diminuição 30 dias após o parto (P<0,05). Os parâmetros hematológicos não mostraram diferença nos períodos fisiológicos estudados, com exceção dos neutrófilos segmentados, que aumentaram com o avanço da gestação. Os dados encontrados servem como referência para estudos sobre nutrição, metabolismo e qualidade do leite em ovelhas leiteiras.

              Genetics and breeding of sheep in Brazil

              Studies in genetics and breeding of sheep in Brazil have increased significantly in recent years. These involve research in characterization, breeding and crossing sheep using new technologies available incorporating both classical quantitative and molecular genetics. Improvements in statistical techniques, computational resources as well as analysis of DNA and gaps in present knowledge and opportunities for possible research are pointed out. There is a need for greater interaction between various groups working in the country as well as interactions with other disciplines such as Geographical Information Systems, Statistics, Bioinformatics, as well as biological studies such as physiology and proteomics.
