          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Abstract: Mediastinal tumors represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for medical team. Depending on the tumor location and patient age group we can have an idea about diagnostic possibilities; sometimes this is not feasible and a surgical approach becomes necessary both as diagnostic and therapeutic. We present the case of a patient with a highly vascular mediastinal tumor that was resected by a thoracoscopic approach, final histopathological report was a glomangioma, a rare tumor derived from myoepithelial cells.

Mesenchymal tumours of the mediastinum—part II

This is the second part of a two-part review on soft tissue tumours which may be encountered in the mediastinum. This review is based on the 2013 WHO classification of soft tissue tumours and the 2015 WHO classification of tumours of the lung, pleura, thymus and heart and provides an updated overview of mesenchymal tumours that have been reported in the mediastinum.

Diagnostic strategies for mediastinal tumors and cysts.

Many histologically different tumors and cysts that affect people of all ages arise from the multiple anatomic structures present in the mediastinum. The number of diagnostic possibilities can be narrowed by considering the patient's age, tumor location, the presence or absence of symptoms and signs, the association of a specific systemic disease, radiographic findings, and biochemical markers. Pathologic diagnosis is often required to confirm a presumed diagnosis and to select the optimal treatment modality. A variety of biopsy techniques for obtaining tissue from the mediastinum have been described, including ultrasound-guided endoscopic biopsy, percutaneous image-guided needle biopsy, parasternal anterior mediastinotomy, cervical mediastinoscopy, and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. The choice of biopsy technique depends on the localization of the lesion, clinical factors such as the age and the condition of the patient, and the availability of special techniques with the required expert and the equipment.

Angiography Before Posterior Mediastinal Tumor Resection: Selection Criteria and Patient Outcomes.

Resection of posterior mediastinal tumors may be complicated by bleeding or neurologic injury. Preoperative spinal angiography of mediastinal tumors has been underreported or not commonly practiced. This study evaluated the selection criteria and outcomes of patients with posterior mediastinal tumors who underwent preoperative angiography and embolization.
