      Relationship between frontal assessment battery scores and activities of daily living/instrumental activities of daily living ability in older adults

          Abstract

          [Purpose] The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between Frontal Assessment Battery scores and the ability to perform activities of daily living/instrumental activities of daily living based on child development, as well as the ability of Frontal Assessment Battery score to predict functional age. [Participants and Methods] The present cross-sectional study included 85 older adults (mean age: 83.5 years, standard deviation: 7.3; men: 23, women: 62; facility-dwelling: 43, home-based: 42) recruited from nursing homes and day centers in Hiroshima and Hyogo, Japan. All the participants were assessed using the Frontal Assessment Battery and perform activities of daily living/instrumental activities of daily living Cognitive Level Version 2.0 scale (ADL/IADL-COG ver.2.0). Spearman rank correlation coefficients and single regression analyses were performed to determine the relationship between the Frontal Assessment Battery score and functional age. The regression equation was then used to predict functional age based on the Frontal Assessment Battery score. [Results] We observed a strong correlation between the Frontal Assessment Battery score and functional age (rs=0.80). Furthermore, the linear regression equation for functional age exhibited a high predictive accuracy ( R 2=0.64). Our results thus indicated that Frontal Assessment Battery scores could be used to predict functional age according to the following equation: functional age (years)=0.56 × Frontal Assessment Battery score + 1.19 and Frontal Assessment Battery score=1.15 × functional age (years) + 1.86. [Conclusion] The present results indicate a significant relationship between Frontal Assessment Battery and perform activities of daily living/instrumental activities of daily living ability based on child development. Functional age, as predicted based on the Frontal Assessment Battery score, may aid rehabilitation practitioners in analyzing the relationship between cognitive function and perform activities of daily living/instrumental activities of daily living ability, setting goals regarding perform activities of daily living/instrumental activities of daily living, and selecting intervention targets in older adults.

            Empirical correlation of mineral commodity prices with exchange-traded mining stock prices

            Mineral commodity prices comprise one of the key criteria in the selection of mining stocks. We contend that of the three principal elements of mineral commodity prices, spot price, forward price and long-term price, one has a greater impact on the share valuation processes used by investors. This research paper examines the extent to which each of these elements influences the valuation process. The intention is to provide investors in mining stocks with a greater understanding of how fluctuations of commodity prices over time affect the prices of the mining stocks they hold, or intend to sell or buy. Three mineral commodities, gold, silver, and copper, were used as case studies, since market data on these commodities is readily available in the public domain. Nine market indices covering all three mineral commodities were selected. These are based on clearly defined criteria with the intention of eliminating ambiguity and to test for correlation with the three sets of mineral commodity prices. Nine mining companies, which were not the primary drivers of the relevant indices employed in the study, were used to validate the results obtained from the indices in order to avoid duplication of the same correlation during cross-checking. Each commodity price was adjusted for operating costs. For each market index, an average operating cost was calculated from the companies comprising its basket, while each company's annual operating costs were used for the stocks of the individual companies examined. The data was collected for the period January 2004 to October 2010. This period was further split up into three sub-periods to account for the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) period that started in mid-2008. We conclude that mining stock prices are correlated with mineral commodity prices, but with spot and forward prices exhibiting stronger correlations than long-term price. This finding should be useful for evaluation purposes. Where cash flow methodologies such as discounted cash flow or earnings per share are used to value ordinary shares and commodity prices are required to estimate future cash flows, the findings suggest that spot prices should be used as opposed to long-term prices.               Functional skill regression in late-stage dementias.

              One hundred fifty-two institutionalized persons with late-stage dementia were rated with a geriatric developmental screening scale that notes cognitive, language, sensorimotor, and self-care abilities. The results showed that the loss of functional abilities in late-stage dementias seems to occur in reverse order of their development in childhood. Developmental congruence was noted within these persons regardless of diagnosis. In addition, the average functional age rating correlated well with scores from the Folstein Mini Mental State examination (MMS) (Folstein, Folstein, & McHugh, 1975): The close correlation between scores indicates that the MMS is a fast and simple tool for predicting not only cognitive impairment but also the approximate stage of functional development.
