          Abstract

Hydatid disease is a major health problem worldwide. Primary hydatid disease of the pancreas is very rare and acute pancreatitis secondary to hydatid cyst has rarely been reported. We report the case of a 38-year-old man who presented acute pancreatitis. A diagnosis of hydatid cyst of the pancreas, measuring 10 cm, was established by abdominal computed tomography before surgery. The treatment consisted of a distal pancreatectomy. The postoperative period was uneventful. Additionally, a review of the literature regarding case reports of acute pancreatitis due to pancreatic hydatid cyst is presented.

Recurrent acute pancreatitis due to a hydatid cyst of the pancreatic head: a case report and review of the literature.

Primary pancreatic hydatid disease is rare and there have only been a few cases of recurrent acute pancreatitis due to a hydatid cyst of the pancreas. We describe a case of recurrent acute pancreatitis in which the definitive diagnosis of hydatid cyst of the pancreatic head was only made during a repeat operation and the patient subsequently underwent total pericystectomy. A hydatid cyst of the pancreas is an extremely rare condition but it may be a causative factor for recurrent acute pancreatitis, especially in endemic areas. In this case, pericystectomy might be the procedure of choice in order to release the pressure.

Epigastric mass due to a hydatid cyst of the pancreas. A case report and review of the literature.

Primary hydatid disease of the pancreas is very rare. We report the case of a 30-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain and an epigastric mass. A diagnosis of a pancreatic cyst was established by ultrasonography and CT scan before surgery. The treatment consisted of the resection of the protruding dome with a cystogastrostomy. The recovery was uneventful and the patient has remained symptom free so far. Hydatid disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all cystic masses in the pancreas, especially in the geographical regions where the disease is endemic.
