      Compensation for iodine deficiency conditions with drugs based on duckweed substrate

          Abstract

          Currently, one of the important problems for the entire population of Russia is the problem of iodine deficiency. This pathology is of significant relevance for residents of the North Caucasus. The growth of the goiter epidemic was provoked by the abolition of iodine prophylaxis from salt iodization in the 70s of the 20th century. In order to avoid an increase in morbidity, they began to develop and introduce not only iodine-containing preparations of chemical origin, but also medicines developed from iodine-containing plants acquired particular relevance. Iodine found in plants is well absorbed by the human body, as it is close to it in biological structure. The most common and generally accepted medicinal plants for the treatment of iodine deficiency conditions are white cinquefoil, sugar kelp and bladderwrack. These plants have a high content of natural iodine, but at the same time, the problem is a significant limitation of raw materials. That is why the search for new plant substrates with a high iodine content and the possibility of restoring iodine deficiency states is so important.

            Pediatric Hypothyroidism: Diagnosis and Treatment.

            Thyroid hormone has important physiologic functions in nearly every organ system. The critical role of thyroid hormone in growth and in physical and neurologic development lends particular importance to the prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment of hypothyroidism in infants and children. Congenital hypothyroidism is common and has potentially devastating neurologic consequences. While the approach to diagnosis and treatment of severe congenital hypothyroidism is well established, data continue to emerge about the genetic causes, clinical significance, and prognosis of the milder forms of congenital hypothyroidism that are increasingly being diagnosed by newborn screening. Similarly, the diagnosis and treatment of severe acquired hypothyroidism is straightforward and clearly of clinical benefit, but uncertainty remains about the optimal management of mild subclinical hypothyroidism. This review summarizes current knowledge of the causes, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of hypothyroidism in infants and children, with a focus on recent developments and areas of uncertainty in this field.

              Iodine, thyroglobulin and thyroid gland.

              Iodine is essential in the biosynthesis of thyroid hormones that affect metabolic processes in the organism from the prenatal state to the elderly. The immediate indicator of iodine intake is the concentration of iodine in urine, but the indicator of iodine intake in the longer term of several months is thyroglobulin (Tg). Tg negatively correlated with increasing intake of iodine in population that do not suffer from thyroid disease, while a more than adequate to excessive iodine intake leads to an increase in Tg. The dependence of Tg on iodine can be described by a U-shaped curve. Thyroglobulin in serum is elevated in thyroid disease mainly in hyperthyroidism (diagnosis E05 of WHO ICD-10 codes) and in goiter (diagnosis E04 of WHO ICD-10 codes). Tg values decrease below 20 microg/l after effective treatment of patients with thyroid disease. Thyroglobulin may thus be an indicator of thyroid stabilization and the success of the thyroid gland treatment.
