Abstract
Filamentous bacteria produce aerial structures to allow spores to be dispersed. A
new class of secreted, surface-active proteins called chaplins has been identified
in Streptomyces coelicolor. Chaplins form unusual amyloid-like fibrils and act cooperatively
to bring about aerial development.
