      First Polish mobile application for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty

          Abstract

          Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is one of the most frequent orthopedic procedures worldwide and its surgical volume is constantly growing. To address the patients’ restricted access to healthcare resources and limited one-on-one contact with the surgeon during the COVID-19 pandemic, we created a reliable source of information for patients undergoing THA. The use of mHealth is increasing with access to modern technology in Poland. Information related to health issues is the second most common web search performed by older adults. Our project aimed to create the first Polish mobile application for THA patients: Endopedia.

          Endopedia was developed for the Android platform based on a survey performed among patients and a collection of frequently asked questions on patients’ internet forums. The content was adapted to the elderly and visually impaired requirements. mHealth solutions should not replace one-on-one conversation, but they can provide substantial support for patients in conditions of limited information.

          Mobile App Rating Scale: A New Tool for Assessing the Quality of Health Mobile Apps

          Background The use of mobile apps for health and well being promotion has grown exponentially in recent years. Yet, there is currently no app-quality assessment tool beyond “star”-ratings. Objective The objective of this study was to develop a reliable, multidimensional measure for trialling, classifying, and rating the quality of mobile health apps. Methods A literature search was conducted to identify articles containing explicit Web or app quality rating criteria published between January 2000 and January 2013. Existing criteria for the assessment of app quality were categorized by an expert panel to develop the new Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS) subscales, items, descriptors, and anchors. There were sixty well being apps that were randomly selected using an iTunes search for MARS rating. There were ten that were used to pilot the rating procedure, and the remaining 50 provided data on interrater reliability. Results There were 372 explicit criteria for assessing Web or app quality that were extracted from 25 published papers, conference proceedings, and Internet resources. There were five broad categories of criteria that were identified including four objective quality scales: engagement, functionality, aesthetics, and information quality; and one subjective quality scale; which were refined into the 23-item MARS. The MARS demonstrated excellent internal consistency (alpha = .90) and interrater reliability intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC = .79). Conclusions The MARS is a simple, objective, and reliable tool for classifying and assessing the quality of mobile health apps. It can also be used to provide a checklist for the design and development of new high quality health apps.

            Hip or knee replacement is a major surgical procedure that can be physically and psychologically stressful for patients. It is hypothesised that education before surgery reduces anxiety and enhances clinically important postoperative outcomes.

              Mobile Health Applications to Promote Active and Healthy Ageing

              The European population is ageing, and there is a need for health solutions that keep older adults independent longer. With increasing access to mobile technology, such as smartphones and smartwatches, the development and use of mobile health applications is rapidly growing. To meet the societal challenge of changing demography, mobile health solutions are warranted that support older adults to stay healthy and active and that can prevent or delay functional decline. This paper reviews the literature on mobile technology, in particular wearable technology, such as smartphones, smartwatches, and wristbands, presenting new ideas on how this technology can be used to encourage an active lifestyle, and discusses the way forward in order further to advance development and practice in the field of mobile technology for active, healthy ageing.
