      THE STUBBORNNESS OF HOPE: LISTENING TO YOUNG FEMALE UNIVERSITY TEACHERS IN CUBA

            Abstract

            This article is based on interviews with young female university teachers carried out in Cuba in 2008. I do not claim that all young women who teach in Cuban universities are represented here; nor is this a detailed examination of daily work in the Cuban post-secondary sector. The article seeks to bring the voices of some young Cuban women who have become university teachers to an international audience so we can hear their insights on gender relations and work in contemporary Cuba, and on local, national and international politics. I argue that these young women demonstrate a commitment to teaching, to their students, and to the collective development of Cuba and Cuban people, seeing themselves as inextricably part of the process and progress of the Revolution.
