          Abstract

Uranium-containing polyoxometalates (U-POMs), an important class of actinide cluster compounds, are the products of the assembly of uranium or uranium and POMs. These cluster compounds illustrate the structural beauty and diversity of obtained U-POMs that can be achieved by the reaction of uranium or uranium and POMs. The structural diversity is revealed by the classification of U-POMs in this review, which are mainly divided into two parts, according to the main metal elements of the clusters, named U-containing heteropolyoxometalates (U-hetero-POMs) and U-oxo-clusters. U-hetero-POMs are further classified by development date from the end of the 20 th century based on the basic building units, including Keggin-type, Dawson-type, Silverton-type, hybrid structures, and cryptand structures. U-oxo-clusters mainly include uranyl peroxide clusters, their derivatives, and U IV-oxo-clusters and mixed-valence U-oxo-clusters. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the synthesis and structures of U-POMs as well as their characterization, properties, and applications. Finally, the development prospects and directions for U-POMs in the future are also elucidated.

Recent advances in porous polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework materials.

Polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) materials contain POM units and generally generate MOF materials with open networks. POM-based MOF materials, which utilize the advantages of both POMs and MOFs, have received increasing attention, and much effort has been devoted to their preparation and relevant applications over the past few decades. They have good prospects in catalysis owing to the electronic and physical properties of POMs that are tunable by varying constituent elements. In this review, we present recent developments in porous POM-based MOF materials, including their classification, synthesis strategies, and applications, especially in the field of catalysis.

            Engineering polyoxometalates with emergent properties.

Polyoxometalates are clusters of metal-oxide units, comprising a large diversity of nanoscale structures, and have many common building blocks; in fact polyoxometalate clusters are perhaps the largest non-biologically derived molecules structurally characterised. Not only can polyoxometalates have gigantic nanoscale molecular structures, but they also a have a vast array of physical properties, many of which can be specifically 'engineered-in'. Here we describe how building block libraries of polyoxometalates can be used to construct systems with important catalytic, electronic, and structural properties. We also show that it is possible to construct complex chemical systems based upon polyoxometalates, manipulating the templating/self templating rules to exhibit emergent processes from the molecular to the macroscopic scale.
