      Complete characterization of the single-qubit quantum gates used in the IBM quantum processors

          Abstract

          Quantum process tomography of each single-qubit quantum gate used in the IBM quantum processors is performed to compute gate error in order to check viability of complex quantum operations in the superconductivity-based quantum computers introduced by IBM and to compare the quality of these gates with the corresponding gates implemented using other technologies. Gate fidelities for all the allowed gates for every allowed position (i.e., by placing the gates in different qubit lines) have been obtained and reported for IBM QX4 architecture. Gate fidelities are observed to be lower than the corresponding values obtained in the other technologies, like NMR. Further, gate fidelities for all the single-qubit gates are obtained for IBM QX2 architecture by placing the gates in the third qubit line (\(q[2]\)). It's observed that the IBM QX4 architecture yields better gate fidelity compared to IBM QX2 in all cases except the case of \(\operatorname{Y}\) gate as far as the gate fidelity corresponding to the third qubit line is concerned. In general, the analysis performed here leads to a conclusion that a considerable technological improvement would be inevitable to achieve the desired scalability required for the realization of complex quantum operations.

          The nitrogen-vacancy colour centre in diamond

          The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) colour centre in diamond is an important physical system for emergent quantum technologies, including quantum metrology, information processing and communications, as well as for various nanotechnologies, such as biological and sub-diffraction limit imaging, and for tests of entanglement in quantum mechanics. Given this array of existing and potential applications and the almost 50 years of NV research, one would expect that the physics of the centre is well understood, however, the study of the NV centre has proved challenging, with many early assertions now believed false and many remaining issues yet to be resolved. This review represents the first time that the key empirical and ab initio results have been extracted from the extensive NV literature and assembled into one consistent picture of the current understanding of the centre. As a result, the key unresolved issues concerning the NV centre are identified and the possible avenues for their resolution are examined.

            Complete Characterization of a Quantum Process: the Two-Bit Quantum Gate

            We show how to fully characterize a quantum process in an open quantum system. We particularize the procedure to the case of a universal two-qubit gate in a quantum computer. We illustrate the method with a numerical simulation of a quantum gate in the ion trap quantum computer.
