          Abstract

The objective of this work was to identify in the Brazilian academic literature contents related to love, lack of love, selfishness and jealousy, which often appear associated to the affective-sexual relationships context. For this, an integrative review of literature was performed using data from PubMed, PsycINFO, SciELO and PePSIC indexes, using these descriptors for the search: "love", "selfishness" and "jealousy". Eleven studies were selected and analyzed, according to the established criteria. It was observed from the data that some relationships between these terms such as love and jealousy are more frequently addressed in the scientific literature. However, other important relationships such as jealousy and selfishness, and love and selfishness, are little explored and even neglected by science, especially Psychology.

Human fronto-mesolimbic networks guide decisions about charitable donation.

Humans often sacrifice material benefits to endorse or to oppose societal causes based on moral beliefs. Charitable donation behavior, which has been the target of recent experimental economics studies, is an outstanding contemporary manifestation of this ability. Yet the neural bases of this unique aspect of human altruism, which extends beyond interpersonal interactions, remain obscure. In this article, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging while participants anonymously donated to or opposed real charitable organizations related to major societal causes. We show that the mesolimbic reward system is engaged by donations in the same way as when monetary rewards are obtained. Furthermore, medial orbitofrontal-subgenual and lateral orbitofrontal areas, which also play key roles in more primitive mechanisms of social attachment and aversion, specifically mediate decisions to donate or to oppose societal causes. Remarkably, more anterior sectors of the prefrontal cortex are distinctively recruited when altruistic choices prevail over selfish material interests.

From vigilance to violence: mate retention tactics in married couples.

Although much research has explored the adaptive problems of mate selection and mate attraction, little research has investigated the adaptive problem of mate retention. We tested several evolutionary psychological hypotheses about the determinants of mate retention in 214 married people. We assessed the usage of 19 mate retention tactics ranging from vigilance to violence. Key hypothesized findings include the following: Men's, but not women's, mate retention positively covaried with partner's youth and physical attractiveness. Women's, but not men's, mate retention positively covaried with partner's income and status striving. Men's mate retention positively covaried with perceived probability of partner's infidelity. Men, more than women, reported using resource display, submission and debasement, and intrasexual threats to retain their mates. Women, more than men, reported using appearance enhancement and verbal signals of possession. Discussion includes an evolutionary psychological analysis of mate retention in married couples.
